Poker is a card game in which players compete to make the best 5-card hand. The cards are dealt in rounds, and after the final betting phase (the player who reveals his or her cards last) is over, only those with superior hands can win. Players may choose to call, raise, or fold their cards. They can also bluff and try to get other players to commit their entire bankroll to the pot.
The rules of poker vary slightly by variant, but all poker games involve betting. The first player to act must ante (put up the minimum amount of money – this varies by game; in our games it is typically a nickel). Once everyone has antes, the dealer deals each player a hand of five cards. Then the betting begins, with each player making bets in turn. Players can also put all their remaining chips into the pot if they wish, which is known as an all-in bet.
A poker hand is a combination of cards that rank in order of strength. The most valuable hands are high pairs, full houses, and straights. A high pair consists of two matching cards of the same rank, and three unmatched cards of lower rank. A full house consists of 3 matching cards of one rank and 2 matching cards of another, while a straight contains 5 consecutive cards in a suit.
There are a number of unwritten rules to poker that must be followed to ensure fair play. For example, it is inappropriate to confuse fellow players by obscuring your bet amount, and it is generally frowned upon to tell other players what you’re doing while they are still in the hand.
